The History of Carrboro


From being founded as a railroad and mill town around 1882, to turning into a vibrant modern community, there's quite a lot of history packed in our small town!

100 Year Centennial - A wonderful overview of the town and its history.

Carrboro Walking Tour - Carrboro's downtown still retains many of it's historic buildings and homes.

Carr Mill Mall - What started out as the town mill has now been re-imagined into a beautiful mall full of local shops.

Carrboro Farmer's Market - Our nationally renowned farmer's market, fruits, veggies, breads, jams, dessert, hand-made goods, it has something for everyone.



Carrboro is home to many fun festivals throughout the year:

Carrboro  Music Festival - The streets close and the town turns in to a free music extravangaza for this annual  festival!

Carrboro Film Festival - A 2 day festival of film art, not to be missed!

West End Poetry Festival - 4 days of readings, workshops & panels!

July 4th Family Celebration - The town convenes at Weaver Street Market, decorates their bikes and scooters and starts the parade procession to the Town Commons, for a lovely, free, old fashioned festival of face painting, bouncy houses, pie eating contest, and much more!

Cat's Cradle - This iconic music venue  has hosted bands such as Nirvana, Iggy Pop, and more. Definitely check out their calendar when considering a visit to Carrboro!

The Art's Center -  Concerts, Theater Productions, Gallery Exhibits, Art Classes, and more.  

2nd Friday Art Walk - Encompassing both Carrboro and Chapel Hill, a fun way to see great art and get to know the town

Womancraft - For 41 years this female operated artist co-op has been featuring local female handcrafted goods and art.

NC Crafts Gallery -  Featuring artists from across the state, this gallery, located near the Town Commons, has a varied array of fantastic art, woodworks, metal works, paintings, etc.
